It’s really comforting to cuddle up with your pet cat and experience a reassuring feeling when they snuggle up in response to your affectionate gestures.
However, it can be a cause for concern, especially when you might not be aware of any pre-existing health conditions that can affect your health, especially when it can be triggered by your exposure to your pets, especially with cats.
Although there might not yet be reported cases from any veterinary clinic Virginia Beach, however, there are recent studies that have discovered quite a number of diseases found in cats that can be potentially dangerous to pets and even humans.
What are these diseases?
The American Association of Feline Practitioners, which is also recognized by every veterinarian Virginia Beach VA, has recently released a list of guidelines outlining several diseases that have recently been found in cats that pose health risks to humans.
There are quite a number of diseases that can be passed from cats to humans through direct contact such as biting organisms like fleas and ticks or pathogens that are released to the environment and affect humans.
One study found that a number of worm parasites can be easily transferred from cats to humans, including an eye worm that can affect humans that can travel to the brain and cause blindness.
A pathogen that has raised a high level of concern is a previously unknown parasite called toxoplasma gondii, which researchers have claimed has been found to cause behavioral changes in humans is believed to be carried by cats.
Another research recently published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery revealed that novel viruses are being discovered by science at a rate that exceeds the human understanding of its medical and clinical relevance.
Among those that were identified in the study were a couple of novel viruses known as gammaherpesviruses and morbilliviruses that were found in domesticated cats. However, the reasons for such viruses in causing diseases are still largely undetermined.
A documented pathogen known as feline viral rhinotracheitis has been found in domestic cats and causes infection with the help of the alphaherpesvirus feline herpesvirus 1
Also, cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were found to develop cancer cells similar to those in humans diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi’s sarcoma–associated herpesvirus. The virus has been found to have proliferated in Australia, the US, Brazil, Singapore, Europe, and Japan.
This type of pathogen includes canine distemper, rinderpest, measles, and phocine distemper have been known to cause diseases in several animal species. First discovered in 2012, this range of viruses has been making its way around the US, Europe, Brazil, and Japan.
Also known as the feline morbillivirus (FeMV), the pathogen is prevalent in both ill and healthy cats. The virus is difficult to isolate and has been found to cause false-positive results during testing, which made it more difficult to study and assess.
How to avoid them
Basic sanitation and hygiene practices have been found to the effective in warding off diseases that can be carried by cats. These include washing of hands after handling cats, cleaning litter boxes regularly, and meat fully cooked during meals.
Also, make sure to take action immediately by keeping pet cats free from fleas, ticks, worms, rabies, and other forms of cat-borne diseases. Being able to maintain cats in good physical health can be as simple as practicing sound and healthy practices to ensure that these diseases and viruses can help you and your cat stay healthy for many years. When in doubt or unsure about symptoms and signs that seem unusual for your pet cat, make sure to visit your veterinary clinic Virginia Beach for more information and guidance.
